Professional, caring individuals, from many disciplines, provide health care in Thompson House and work together as a team with the resident and family to ensure an integrated approach to resident care. The expertise of each person on the care team contributes to the comprehensive assessment of resident's needs and collectively they plan, implement, monitor and evaluate the resident's care.
Restorative and palliative care are provided in a positive, supportive manner with emphasis on health and comfort. Members of the care team review the resident's plan of care quarterly and on an on-going basis if the resident's health care needs change. The care team meets with the resident and/or the Substitute Decision Maker to review and plan for the resident's care six weeks after admission, if the resident's condition changes and on an annual basis.
Residents of Thompson House benefit from the convenience and expertise of an on-site physician who makes regular visits to Thompson House. Each floor of our Home has a doctor assigned to see residents on a specific day each week and in addition, there is a doctor on call 24 hours a day.
All medical consultations and treatments are provided in a manner that respects the individual's right to either accept or refuse treatment.
Nursing care is provided 24 hours per day and Health Care Aides provide daily personal care under the supervision of registered nursing staff. Treatments, medications and ongoing assessments are provided by the dedicated registered nursing staff who seek medical advice from physicians as the resident’s condition warrants.
At Thompson House we believe that restorative care is the cornerstone of an improved quality of life. Physiotherapy services are provided in-house, free of charge, 4 days a week to help us provide goal oriented rehabilitation that meets specific health care needs and improves the resident’s level of independence. The on-site Physiotherapist can also arrange for assistive devices such as, canes, walkers and wheelchairs as needed.
On-site Chiropody services are provided on a fee-for-service basis every 6 to 8 weeks by a qualified chiropodist. Residents may choose to arrange their own dental and eye care or they may book an appointment with the on-site dental team or Ophthalmologist. Please note, O.H.I.P. covers the cost of eye examinations but does not cover the cost of eye glasses.
On site appointments can be booked through the nursing department and assistance is also provided to residents who would like to visit a health care professional at another location. Families are encouraged to accompany residents and provide transportation to and from appointments outside of Thompson House. When a family member or friend is not available, an escort can be arranged through the nurse with related costs billed to the resident.
Our inviting main dining room, located on the first floor, is the perfect environment to enjoy the nutritious meals served by our friendly wait staff. Tables accommodate two to four residents and each resident has an assigned seat according to his/her needs and preferences. Every effort is made to accommodate seating requests and arrange compatible tablemates to ensure a pleasurable dining experience. The dining areas are supervised for resident safety and assistance is provided with meals if necessary.
Less mobile residents with special needs receive additional support while enjoying their meals in one of the two meal service areas located on the fourth floor.
Our extensive menu is developed by a Registered Dietitian in accordance with the wishes of the resident population. The menu meets Canada’s Food Guide requirements and choices are offered to accommodate our residents’ individual diet plans and preferences. Seasonal foods, special holidays and theme days are incorporated in the 5-week menu cycle. Refreshments are also served between meals and at bedtime.
A Registered Dietitian is an integral part of the interdisciplinary care team at Thompson House. Our Dietitian provides nutritional assessment and counselling and works with each resident to develop a nutritional care plan that best meets his/her needs.
Our Care Team also includes skilled recreation staff who plan activities and offer a wide variety of programs based on residents' social, intellectual, physical, spiritual and emotional needs. A monthly calendar outlining a wide variety of programs is distributed to all residents and daily reminders are posted on each floor. Our recreation staff make every effort to spend individual time with residents to provide additional support when needed. They also work closely with devoted, compassionate volunteers who give their time and talents to provide a variety of group and individual programs.
